David W. Weddel
Deputy to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations
Communication Networks
David W. Weddel is a native of Kearney, Nebraska and a graduate of the University of Washington and the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute, University of Minnesota.
Commissioned via Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 1972 he served afloat in USS Edward McDonnell (FF-1043), USS Sampson (DDG-10), USS Semmes (DDG-18), USS McCloy (FF-1038) and USS Kauffman (FFG-59) as Executive Officer, and USS Gary (FFG-51) as Commanding Officer, and as Assistant Chief of Staff for C4I (N6) for Commander Seventh Fleet.
Ashore he served as NROTC instructor at the University of Minnesota, with Commander Task Force 24/84 as surface operations officer, OPNAV-094, and OPNAV N62. Mr. Weddel left active duty Naval Service in January of 2000.
Upon retirement he was employed by Anteon Corporation, Arlington, Virginia from 2000 through January of 2003 supporting the Navy’s MIDS and Link 16 projects, development of the Korean Tactical Data Link Improvement plan and IUSS end-to-end assessment.
In February of 2003 Mr. Weddel was selected for appointment to the Senior Executive Service (SES) with an initial assignment as the Director, SPAWAR Washington Liaison Office (WLO) representing Commander, SPAWAR Systems Command in various venues within the National Capital Region to include interaction with NAVSEA, NAVAIR and NAVSUP, OSD, Navy and Joint Staff. Mr. Weddel was selected for and served as the Deputy OPNAV N71 in 2005.
Mr. Weddel was selected as Deputy DCNO for Communications and Networks (OPNAV N6B) in November of 2006. In this capacity he is the Senior SES and civilian advisor to VADM Harris (OPNAV N6) on all issues related to the development of Navy Program Objectives, Resourcing and Planning for all Communications and Network programs, as well as supporting his role as the Deputy Department of Navy Chief Information Officer (DDCIO). Working with Mr. Weddel are two Flag Officers, two SES's and the OPNAV N6 staff who manage a portfolio of C4 programs of just under $6B dollars per year.
