Bio - LTC Gregory Motes
LTC Motes is in charge of providing instruction of application development on Android and iPhone to the Functional Area 53 course. His team has developed and published over 40 applications on both the Android Marketplace and the Apple App Store, with nearly 400,000 downloads. He led a small team of FA53 officers to produce four iPhone apps for the Apps for the Army competition, including the Physical Readiness Training app that won in its category and two additional apps that finished second place. In the past year, he has spoken at multiple conferences and forums on mobile phone applications and development.
LTC Gregory Motes received a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English from Florida State University in 1994 and was commissioned as an Armor Officer in the United States Army. He was a Tank Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Scout Platoon Leader with the Opposing Forces in 1/11 ACR at Fort Irwin, California, then moved to Germany to take command of a Tank Company that deployed as part of KFOR 2B. He was then chosen to be a Functional Area 53 (Information Management Systems) Officer, and served in that capacity in Kuwait as a system administrator, Iraq as the MNF-I policy chief, and Korea as the 2nd Infantry Division Automation Management Officer. At Fort Gordon, he was Chief of the Information Dissemination Management Division at the School of Information Technology at Fort Gordon, Georgia, in charge of 48 instructors who teach nearly 5000 students annually.
He was recently tasked to form a Mobile Applications Branch in the new Accelerated Capabilities Division at the Signal Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon, GA. This organization develops Android, iPhone and Windows Phone apps for the Army, to support training and execution within TRADOC, as well as understanding security and mobile device management solutions. His current focus is in client / server technologies, virtualization, distance learning, digital literacy, battle command systems, and Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications through mobile phone application development. In his career, he has won multiple writing awards, including the recent AUSA/ARCIC Landpower Essay in October 2010. While in the Army, he received a Master's degree in Information Technology and is a doctoral candidate in Instructional Technology at the University of South Florida, preparing a dissertation titled "Combat Alert Notification Systems Impact on Situation Awareness: Analysis of a User Notification System in a Command and Control Environment".
