Bio - Steve Thompson

CURRENT POSITION:  Steven E. Thompson is Director for Cybersecurity at the National Security Council.  In this capacity he works with a broad interagency community, the Congress, allied governments, and the private sector on strategy, policy, and initiatives for a comprehensive, collaborative approach to cybersecurity.   He was a member of the team that produced the Cyberspace Policy Review released by President Obama on May 29, 2009.

EDUCATION:  Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of Wooster and a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University, both in mathematics, and did extensive graduate study in U.S. national security policy at The George Washington University.

PRIOR POSITIONS:  Mr. Thompson joined the National Security Agency (NSA) in 1983 as a cryptologic mathematician, performing applied research and development during five years in information assurance and signals intelligence assignments.  He then spent six years representing NSA in various interagency and international policy deliberations, interrupted by one year as a Congressional Fellow with the American Political Science Association, during which he worked for the Subcommittee on Economic Policy, Trade, and the Environment of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, U.S. House of Representatives.  From 1995-2007 Mr. Thompson managed several major technology development and mission organizations at NSA.  From 2007-2009 he served as Director for Strategic Foundations of the Joint Interagency Cyber Task Force and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.  Mr. Thompson has received the NSA Meritorious Civilian Service Award and numerous other performance awards.

PERSONAL:  A native of Apple Creek, Ohio, Mr. Thompson now lives in Maryland with his wife, Alison, and two children.  He enjoys hiking, biking, theatre, traditional music and dance of the British Isles, and home brewing.
