CAPT Charles Mathieu - Bio

CAPT Charles MathieuCaptain Charles Mathieu is a 1982 graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Upon graduation, he served on USCGC MELLON home ported in Seattle, WA. His next assignment was as Commanding Officer, USCGC CAPE GULL home ported in Miami, FL. CAPE GULL deployed to Grenada immediately following the Operation “Urgent Fury” invasion and participated in the Operation “Wagon Wheel” anti-drug effort.

After attending graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, Captain Mathieu served for 3 years as a design engineer at Coast Guard Information Systems Center in Alexandria, VA, where he worked on COMMSTA control, Digital High Frequency Communications, and encrypted voice systems. In 1991 Captain Mathieu was assigned to the Pre-Commissioning Detail, USCGC JARVIS, home ported in Honolulu, HI where he served as Operations Officer. Captain Mathieu was assigned next to USCG Atlantic Area’s Telecommunications Branch located on Governors Island, NY. His duties included the COMMSYS 2000 project which remoted all operations from the various communications stations to a single Master Station. After participating in moving the Atlantic Area Command to Portsmouth, VA, in 1997, he was assigned as Executive Officer USCGC BEAR, home ported in Portsmouth, VA. BEAR deployed to the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas in support of Operations “Allied Force” and “Noble Anvil” during the Kosovo crisis. Moving down the pier to the Command and Control Engineering Center in 1999, Captain Mathieu served as Chief Engineering Division during which time. Captain Mathieu took command of USCGC TAMPA in 2003. Deployments included armed helicopter drug seizures in the Caribbean and to the Mediterranean and Black Seas in support of the US Navy Sixth Fleet. In 2005, Captain Mathieu reported to Coast guard Headquarters in Washington DC as Chief of C4 & Sensors Capabilities (CG-761). In June 2008, Captain Mathieu assumed command of C2CEN where he led CG Modernization’s huge increased in this command’s responsibilities, geographic diversity, and doubling in overall size. C2CEN became the Command, Control & Communications Engineering Center, or C3CEN, in July 2010. In June of 2011 Capt Mathieu reported back to Headquarters were he serves as Deputy Assistant Commandant for C4IT.

Captain Mathieu holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering, Master of Arts Degree in National Security and International Studies and is a graduate of the Naval War College. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (2), Coast Guard Achievement Medal (2), Commandant’s Letter of Commendation (2), the NATO Medal for Kosovo, and the US Kosovo Campaign Medal. Captain Mathieu and his wife, the former Mary Gerah of Medfield, Mass, have two daughters, Nicole and Melissa, both graduates of the College of William & Mary.
