Chapter Focused on Continued Delivery of Successful Event, Scholarship Programs


Washington, DC July 14, 2008 — The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association’s DC Chapter (AFCEA DC), a non-profit association focused on promoting higher education in the hard sciences, mathematics, computer technology, and engineering, today announced its newly elected Board of Director members for the 2008-2009 season.  Each member will have voting privileges and will provide strategic direction with the goal of driving contributions to the AFCEA DC scholarship program.  

            “AFCEA DC’s Board of Directors is comprised of senior industry leaders that have extensive experience in the defense community,” said current AFCEA DC President Warren Suss.  “We rely on these individuals to not only provide oversight to the Chapter, but also to lead the various committees we have in place.  We look forward to welcoming the new members to the Chapter.”

            As part of their responsibilities, the new Board of Director members will focus on continuing AFCEA DC’s successful events including the monthly luncheon series, seasonal executive-level events, golf tournament, and scholarship program.  The following provides a brief background on each new Board member:

  • Sonya Cork, Regional VP, Military Departments and Civilian Programs, Verizon Business Federal (Class of 2008-2011)

      Ms. Cork oversees sales and implementation for all military departments, as well    as several major civilian customers.  She has over 20 years of experience in the    sales and telecommunications industry with a concentration in the federal market.

  • Fred Justice, Manager, Strategic Planning and Business Development, National Security Group, Oracle Corporation (Class of 2007-2010)

      Mr. Justice is responsible for business development strategy and implementation    across several agencies in the intelligence community.  He has over 30 years of      government technology experience, including an Air Force career specializing in           communications operations and acquisition in the space and intelligence arenas.   

  • Gene Kakalec, Senior Vice President, Defense Solutions Group, SAIC Corporation (Class of 2008-2011)

      Mr. Kakalec oversees all of the daily operations and activities of business   development for this $3B organization.  He has more than 25 years of experience   in business development, marketing communications, strategic planning, merger             and acquisitions, P&L management, and sales in the systems integration, IT       services, and products to the international, federal/defense, state/local, and             commercial marketplaces.

  • Richard (Dick) Mayo, Senior Vice President of Strategic Programs, CACI International, Inc. (Class of 2008-2011)

      Mr. Mayo supports organizational, technological, and strategic initiatives to help    CACI continue aligning its core capabilities with emerging needs for national      defense and the transformation of America’s military.  He has more than 35 years            of leadership experience.

  • Dennis (Denni) Moran, VP, DoD Programs, Defense Communications and Electronics Division, Harris (Class of 2008-2011)

      Mr. Moran is responsible for managing Harris’ strategic engagements across the     DoD.  Prior to joining Harris, he served 31 years in the U.S. Army, reaching the           rank of Major General.

  • Joseph (Skip) Nowland, President and General Manager, Defense and National Security Sector, Apptis Inc. (Class of 2008-2011)

      Mr. Nowland is responsible for business strategies, sales, profit & loss         performance, business development, customer handling, recruitment, and world-          wide business operations for the company’s largest business sector.  He has more        than 20 years of military leadership experience, as well as 14 years of federal       business management expertise.

  • Brian Roach, GM, US Federal – DoD, Microsoft Corporation (Class of 2008-2011)

      Mr. Roach maintains profit & loss responsibility for product sales, strategy, and     oversight of services sales into the Departments of the Air Force, Army, Navy, as well as Joint Forces and Combatant Commands.  Prior to joining Microsoft, he    spent 14 years as a systems engineer and program manager in the defense and       aerospace community.

  • David Romola, Strategic Relationship Manager – Army, Deloitte & Touche USA LLP (Class of 2006-2009)

      Mr. Romola’s experience includes business development, relationship         management, and strategic planning consulting to senior executives in          government and the private sector, as well as enterprise-wide IT       selection/management of large-scale DoD reengineering and transformation            programs.  He has worked with federal government clients since 1986. 

  • Deborah (Debby) Werner, VP of Business Development, BAE IT (Class of 2008-2011)

      Ms. Werner leads a team responsible for business development strategy and           execution of that strategy across the organization.  She has over 25 years of            experience in the federal technology industry.
